April ’06:
Together with the Mills family,
Carle Foundation Hospital and
Carle Clinic Association break
ground on Mills Breast Cancer
Institute. Linda Mills, who lost
her battle with cancer a few months
later, says that the groundbreaking
ceremony is “almost like
a dream come true.”
Oct. ’06:
Construction crews begin clearing
and excavating the site. The South
Clinic drive at University Avenue
and Orchard Street is closed and
traffic is rerouted to the south
drive on Coler Street.
Dec. ’06 –
July ‘07: Construction
begins, with workers finishing
the basement by mid-March. Crews
begin constructing the steel frame
next.
July ’07-March
’08: When the frame
is finished, crews begin putting
up walls and other interior structures
and furnishings, including carpet,
wall treatments and window coverings.
April ’08:
Physicians, researchers and staff
begin moving into the building.
After an inspection from the Illinois
Department of Health, the facility
opens to patients. |
